Josh ‘The Tartan Tornado’ earned a Super-Lightweight World title shot against IBF champion Ivan ‘The Beast’ Baranchyk in the 140 lb World Boxing Super Series semi-final after stopping Ryan Martin at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro.
The 27-year-old Scot utterly dominated the bout and stopped 25-year-old American Ryan Martin in the seventh round.
“I told you, nobody’s beating me in this Hydro, man,” said Taylor.
“These fans are amazing, best in the world. So thanks, everybody, for coming out.
“I’m coming into my prime. I said it all the way up to this fight; I’m performing my best in the gym, relaxed. I’m coming into my prime years now. I just beat a very good fighter there, and there’s nothing stopping me. I’m winning this tournament, definitely.”
In the other WBSS Quarter-Final of the night, Filipino-American Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire won the WBA Unified 118 lb title, as 26-year-old Ryan Burnett was forced to retire from the fight after four rounds of action due to a lower back injury.
Donaire now moves on to the semi-final of the World Boxing Super Series, where he will face WBO titleholder, South-African Zolani Tete, for a place in the 118 lb Ali Trophy final.
“As a warrior and as a fighter, you’ve got to like a guy like Ryan. Early on, he just kept coming,” said Donaire.
“It didn’t go the way I wanted it to, but a win is a win. I fought like the bigger guy in there and I was also able to box. I felt strong and I came in with power because I was the bigger guy. Age ain’t nothing but a number,” said the 35-year-old.
“Tete is a formidable opponent, but I always say I’ll be victorious. I’ll be even faster in that fight,” he promised.
The next week of the World Boxing Super Series sees the Ali Trophy tournament travel to Chicago where we will see Mairis Briedis vs Noel Mikaelian and Krzysztof Glowacki vs Maksim Vlasov in the two Cruiserweight Quarter-Finals on an incredible doubleheader at the UIC Pavilion in the USA.
